The pandemic has disrupted our daily lives, including our summer travel plans. However, it hasn’t stopped us from traveling completely - it’s just changed how we travel, and we may have to reconsider whether that trip we originally planned still makes sense. If you’re still considering whether to move forward with your existing travel bookings, check out our guide on flight cancellations, hotel cancellations, airline safety, and hotel safety during this time.
New trends have emerged since we were advised to stay at home. From traveling abroad and staying in luxurious hotels, we’re now driving locally and staying in a cabin by the lake. Compared to hotels, home rentals offer a homier feel, privacy, low cost, and space - a great option for a socially distanced getaway this summer. We thought we’d share some popular home rental platforms that you may want to consider when searching for your home away from home.
Airbnb is one of the most popular vacation rental sites, offering a wide variety of accommodations. You can book an entire home or a private room if you’re on a budget. Recently, Airbnb also launched their Online Experiences which allows its guests to connect with different people across the globe. You can choose from cooking classes with some world-renowned chefs, Q&A sessions with Olympic athletes, or virtual visits to animal sanctuaries.
Vrbo / HomeAway
Vrbo (previously VRBO and HomeAway) is a vacation rental marketplace that allows you to rent different accommodation options that bring families together. Unlike Airbnb, Vrbo does not offer shared spaces, only entire homes which makes the site ideal for stays with large groups (e.g. a family vacation). You can find your next home away from home!
Sonder is an apartment rental platform, but unlike Airbnb, they manage the apartments themselves. This allows you to enjoy the perks of both home rentals and hotels. You’ll have the consistency of a hotel with Sonder’s care and management, but the homey feel of an Airbnb. These accommodations also have exclusive amenities for its guests, such as a dedicated elevator and concierge. That being said, Sonder apartments are generally recommended for business travel.
Along with the flexible cancellation policy, Sonder is now offering self check-in and contact-free support so you can travel comfortably. Hand sanitizers are up for grab whenever available.
Avantstay offers short-term rentals across some states that hotels don’t generally service. Boutique hotels and commercial spaces are being leased and converted to a technology-first accommodation. Here are their cleaning protocol and COVID-19 policy updates - the Avant way!
